LAKELAND, Mich. --A woman was taken to jail for buying an illegal drug after the company illegally sold it to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
The woman, age 34, was charged in her home with importing and selling a prescription drug for more than $4,000 each. She was arrested and charged with importing and selling an illegal drug.
The woman, who said she was buying a prescription drug for "Viagra" from a friend in the South, took the prescription drug in hopes of selling it to the U. Food and Drug Administration, according to documents obtained by KNS.
She was also arrested at the scene of a drug overdose, said Paul B. Cunha, director of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
In her case, Cunha said, the FDA asked her about her drug. She had purchased prescription drugs online for the past 12 years, but she stopped taking them when she was feeling better.
The FDA said it was aware of the incident and that Cunha was not aware of the drug's potential side effects.
She was not charged, Cunha said, adding that she had a $200,000 criminal fine that was due to a $1.6 million fine in state court.
Cunha said it was the FDA's responsibility to take any appropriate action.
"We have a responsibility to make sure that we're not doing things that we think are illegal and do not violate the law," he said. "It's time to do something that is legitimate."
The FDA said it was aware of Cunha's arrest and that the woman had been buying her prescription drugs online to sell them. She also stopped the drug at a red light.
The FDA said it was aware that Cunha is a "moderator," meaning he can sell drugs without having to physically visit a doctor or pharmacy.
The FDA said it would not beifying the company that the woman bought the drugs, saying it was the company that purchased the drug.
"We are not providing any information to the FDA, nor are we aware of any potential adverse effects of this drug," Cunha said. "We will continue to pursue those allegations."

The FDA said the woman is currently being treated for her prescription drug Viagra. She has been taking Viagra for about two years.
